The Show, Which Appeared at the Barbican Last Year, Could Be Returning to the Capital in the Autumn as The Wizard of Oz Continues to October
Last year audiences picked up theatre tickets and headed to the Barbican Theatre to witness Samantha Womack, among others, in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “South Pacific”, which also appears on a UK tour. But this might not have been the last we have heard from the Lincoln Centre production as it has now been indicated, courtesy of Baz Bamigboye in the Daily Mail, that the production could make a return to the capital via the West End.
It has been rumoured that “South Pacific” could head to the London Palladium, the location currently occupied by “The Wizard of Oz”, and Womack would be making the transition as well, giving London theatre audiences another chance to witness the work of the former “EastEnders” actress.
This is not the first time that a West End version has been suggested, with Bamigboye himself pointing this out in September 2011. However, this is the first time that the Palladium has been associated with the production and the Mail columnist also points out that there is a musical production of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” tied to the venue for next spring.
Samantha Womack is an actress who has previously appeared in a wealth of television shows, including “EastEnders”, “The Bill”, “Game On” and “Babes in the Wood”. But these are not her only claims to fame, having also appeared in front of audiences at the Piccadilly Theatre in 2006 alongside Patrick Swayze in “Guys and Dolls”. She also represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1991 with the song “A Message to Your Heart”, which also earned her a place in the charts.
The production is set during the Second World War and focuses on the war in the pacific, where a range of couples are stationed during the conflict. Womack portrays nurse Nellie Forbush, whose relationship is with a French plantation owner.
“South Pacific” may be headed to the London Palladium in the Autumn of 2012. More details will be posted as they emerge.
