You've read the book. You've seen the film. Now experience Legally Blonde the Musical in London. The show previews in the West End during November 2008 and follows on from its hugely successful run on Broadway, where it created its own bit of history in June 2007. Only a very few Broadway musicals have ever managed to exceed weekly gross figures of $1,000,000. But Legally Blonde the Musical did just that during the week ending 24 June with a final weekly Broadway gross of $1,003,282.
The London production is set to follow the same format as the Broadway show, which was adapted from the original novel of the same name by Amanda Brown and from the film Legally Blonde starring Reese Witherspoon. The book of the musical was written by Heather Hach. Nell Benjamin and Laurence O'Keefe collaborated on the musical score and lyrics. Jerry Mitchell directed and choreographed the Broadway production.
Legally Blonde - The Story
The musical begins with the introduction of Elle Woods - blonde president of UCLA's sorority Delta Nu. Elle is infatuated with Warner Huntington the Third - an ambitious Harvard-bound law student. But Warner is not of the same mind as Elle and out at a pre-engagement party dinner Warner calls a stop to their relationship, claiming that he needs to be with someone more serious.
Elle is devastated, but resolves to pursue Warner to Harvard in the name of love. Her plan is to impress Warner and win him back, but she is out of her depth and is unable to compete with Warner's new girlfriend, Vivienne Kensington. At Vivienne's suggestion Professor Callahan kicks Elle out of class.
The only person at Harvard who feels some sympathy for her is law teaching assistant Emmett Forrest. He tells her that she will achieve nothing if she doesn't resolve to study hard. Realising that her infatuation with Warner is preventing her from studying she decides that it is not her hair colour that will get Warner's attention but her work. She resolves to study hard eventually defeating Warner and Vivienne in a classroom debate - a victory that wins her an internship along with Warner and Vivienne.
The story moves on to the trial of fitness mogul Brooke Wyndham. Brooke is accused of murdering her older husband. Recognising Elle as one of the Delta Nu she confides in her, telling her the truth. Elle uses the information to great advantage in the courtroom, building a case for Brooke's innocence. Professor Callahan, who was hired by Brooke to take the case, is impressed with Elle's skills and fires the other interns. But on making unwanted advances towards Elle, she slaps him and she is fired as well.
On hearing the situation Brooke fires Callahan as her legal representative and hires Elle and Emmett. They succeed in having Brooke's case dismissed when Brooke's stepdaughter accidentally confesses to the murder. Warner is impressed and proposes to Elle, but Elle has moved on and doesn't want to know. The show ends with Elle proposing to Emmett and Emmett accepting.
