The Sunshine Boys
Danny DeVito teams up with Richard Griffiths and director Thea Sharrock for an anticipated production of “The Sunshine Boys”, which is set to appear at the Savoy Theatre in London’s West End. The show will mark the West End debut of the Hollywood actor, whose career has spanned many decades on the big screen, and replaces the blockbuster show “Legally Blonde the Musical”, which closes its doors at the venue in April. Those picking up theatre tickets can catch the show as it runs from April to July 2012.
It’s hard to say what Danny DeVito is most famous for but this is because of the wealth of movies in which he has appeared over the years, in addition to television programmes and, in the case of Broadway’s 1970s production of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, the theatre. Many will remember his portrayal of the Penguin in “Batman Returns” or his appearances in “Romancing the Stone” and its sequel “Jewel of the Nile”, though he also appeared alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Twins” and “Junior”. These days, however, he plays Frank Reynolds on the US television series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”.
Richard Griffiths also has his fair share of cult movies to his name and this is why London theatre audiences will recognise him from the likes of “Withnail and I”, “Naked Gun 2½: The Smell off of Fear” and “Ghandi”, in addition to his recent appearance in “The Pirates of the Caribbean: One Stranger Tides”. However, he has also appeared in a wealth of London stage shows, including the well known production of “The History Boys” at the Lyttelton National Theatre, a venue he returned to in recent years in “The Habit of Art”. He has also worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
In “The Sunshine Boys”, they portray Al Lewis (Griffiths) and Willy Clark (DeVito), a former Vaudevillian double act who have long since parted ways. Not only did they become tired of one another after many decades together, there is also bitterness as Lewis decided to turn his back on show business when Clark wanted to continue. Now many years have passed and CBS wants them to reunite for a television special and time will tell if they can put their differences aside.
“The Sunshine Boys” appears at the Savoy Theatre from Thursday 17th May 2012 (previews from Friday 27th April 2012) to Saturday 28th July 2012.
