A Tale of Two Cities

“A Tale of Two Cities” is a story that has been told on countless occasions over the last century and a half, but it has lost none of the poignancy that it held upon its original publication. This is despite the 200 million copies sold around the world, the numerous stage adaptations and its forays on the screen, so it goes to show that it is a gripping text and one that audiences continue to hold in high regards.

With that in mind it is the perfect show to bring to the stage of the Charing Cross Theatre in April as the venue celebrates the bicentenary of Charles Dickens, born in 1812. The musical production features direction from Paul Nicholas, whilst Steven David Horwich and David Soames team for the book. Music is by David Pomeranz whilst the musical arrangements are by John Cameron.

The classic story focuses on the two cities of the title – Paris and London – the former during the French Revolution as rebels take on the establishment and the latter during the social upheavals of the 19th century. We focus on numerous characters during these parallel periods, but among them is one man and his sacrifice in the name of unrequited love.

Paul Nicholas, directing, is an actor whose work has been seen across many decades on the stage and screen and today he is best known for his appearances in shows like “Just Good Friends” and movies like “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, in addition to songs like “Reggae Like it Used to Be”. His stage career as an actor has included the likes of “Barnum” at the Dominion Theatre and “The Mysterious Mr Love” at the Comedy Theatre (now the Harold Pinter Theatre). He first directed “A Tale of Two Cities” at Upstairs at the Gatehouse at the end of the last decade.

So the production is in safe hands at the Charing Cross Theatre, which will be the home of both “The Pajama Men – In the Middle of No-one” and “A Bowl of Cherries” prior to its arrival. It is likely to attract a wealth of London theatre fans during its run.

It appears at the venues from Thursday 5th April 2012 to Saturday 12th May 2012.
