Horrible Histories - Barmy Britain

The West End is full of shows that take audiences back in time, whether it is the Britain of the 1930s in “The 39 Steps” at the Criterion Theatre, the Paris of the turn of the 20th century in “The Phantom of the Opera” or the windy city in the 1920s in “Chicago”. However, a show landing on the stage of the Garrick Theatre in 2012 will give audiences above the age of six an altogether different history lesson when it runs from February to September. “Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain” is set to fill us in on some of the more bizarre characters of our nation’s history and in doing so it does not shy away from the gruesome details.

The “Horrible Histories” series has been around since the early 1990s and though they originally started out as books on various different historical topics they eventually expanded into different media. There’s a CBBC series, a cartoon series for CiTV and, as should be clear from this production, a series of plays based on the books and as a result children nationwide have enjoyed the series in a number of ways. Prior to “Barmy Britain” there were also “The Frightful First World War”, “Vile Victorians”, “The Blitzed Brits” and “Terrible Tudors”.

On this occasion the focus is on the ‘barmy’ people that make up British history and as a result those with theatre tickets will get to learn about famous historical figures like Guy Fawkes, who attempted to blow up parliament, and Henry VIII, perhaps one of the most famous monarchs through the ages. The result will be a show to remember as “Horrible Histories” comes to the stage thanks to the writing talents of Terry Deary, Ciaran McConville and Neal Foster.

The latter also serves as the director of the show and he has various credits to his name.  He has also worked as an actor over the years and as a result he is highly experienced in the world of theatre, having also founded the Birmingham Stage Company, who have presented a number of the “Horrible Histories” stage shows.

“Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain” runs at the Garrick Theatre from Tuesday 14th February 2012 until Saturday 1st September 2012.
