Master Class

Over the Christmas months audiences headed to the Aldwych Theatre in London’s West End will witness one of the stars of Cagney and Lacey – Sharon Gless – take to the stage in “A Round-Heeled Woman”. But that won’t be the only opportunity London theatre audiences have to see a star of the American television show on a West End stage as January 2012 brings Tyne Daly to the Vaudeville Theatre as she brings her Broadway performance in “Master Class” to this side of the Atlantic. Terrence McNally’s play has plenty of admirers and with a well known star like Daly in the lead it is likely to attract a great deal of attention.

Daly appeared in “Master Class” when it was staged at the Manhattan Theater Club in 2011 and in doing so the gears were set in motion for this new West End production at the Vaudeville Theatre. It was the latest in a long line of theatre roles for the star, who has also appeared in films like “The Enforcer” alongside TV shows such as “Cagney & Lacey”, and over the years she has starred in everything from “The Seagull” to “Rabbit Hole” on Broadway. She also earned a Tony Award for her performance in “Gypsy: A Musical Fable” in 1989.

But she is not the only Broadway talent making the journey across the Atlantic. Also returning is Stephen Wadsworth, who directed “Master Class” in New York earlier this year and has also been behind various other works stateside.  He has been behind numerous operas such as “Iphigénie en Tauride” and “Boris Godunov” and has previously brought work to the Edinburgh Festival and to the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and as a result he is a renowned talent whose career is likely to continue to bring high quality work to the stage.

And with “Master Class” he presents Daly as a diva and pedagogue who teaches a voice master class with numerous students of differing abilities. During the course of the play we get glimpses into her younger life and as a result we see many interesting episodes from her experiences, including an affair with Aristotle Onassis, the Greek Shipping Magnate.

“Master Class” appears at the Vaudeville Theatre from Tuesday 7th February 2012 (previews from Saturday 21st January 2012) until Saturday 28th April 2012.
