Hay Fever

Over 80 years since audiences first witnessed the play at the Ambassador’s Theatre, Noël Coward’s acclaimed 1925 production “Hay Fever” returns to the West End, this time with a run at the venue that shares his name. The production is set to be directed by the renowned Howard Davies and not only will London theatre audiences get a chance to experience a play from one of the best known theatrical names of the 20th century they will also get to experience the work of a talented cast. This includes theatre star Lindsay Duncan and “Peep Show” actress Olivia Colman as well as Jeremy Northam and Kevin McNally.

The play focuses on a particularly chaotic weekend defined by scandal, secrets and awkwardness as Coward’s play introduces us to the character of Judith Bliss (Duncan), a former star of the London stage who is in the process of milking her retirement for all its worth. The mentioned chaos is the result of Bliss’s decision to head out into the country along with her young suitor, unaware that her novelist husband and their children are going to be doing the same thing.  The result is a memorable house party with plenty of awkwardness and disorder to leave a lasting impression.

Howard Davies is a director whose work has included numerous London theatre productions alongside projects for the Bristol Old Vic, the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Broadway. His credits include the recent production of “All My Sons” with Zoë Wanamaker at the Apollo Theatre in 2010 (and in 2000, for which he earned a Laurence Olivier Award), “The Play About the Baby” at the Almeida Theatre and 2011’s “The Cherry Orchard” at the National Theatre. He is a renowned director whose work is regularly held in high regard.

Meanwhile, Olivia Colman is best known for her television work in the likes of “Peep Show”, “Green Wing” and “That Mitchell and Webb Look”, though she has also appeared in numerous movies like “Confetti” and “Tyrannosaur”. Her theatre credits include “England People Very Nice” at the National Theatre in 2009.

“Hay Fever” follows “Million Dollar Quartet” at the Noël Coward Theatre with a run from Thursday 23rd February 2012 (previews from Friday 10th February 2012) to Saturday 2nd June 2012.
