A Round Heeled Woman

A Round-Heeled Woman

The Aldwych Theatre in London’s West End is the new home of a production that has proven to be a great success at its original home on the other side of the Atlantic and during its recent run at London’s Riverside Studios. The production is an adaptation of the book by Jane Juska and features Sharon Gless in the lead role of a woman playing the dating game in her late 60s in California. The show arrives at the theatre just after the appearance of “Cool Hand Luke”, which ends its run in January, and precedes the production of “Top Hat”, which arrives later in 2012.

In Jane Juska’s “A Round-Heeled Woman” the focus is on the author as she attempts to find sex in California at the age of 67. At the beginning of the play – and the novel – she is a divorcee who has been out of the game for three decades before eventually deciding enough is enough. Juska places an ad in the New York Review of Books and before long she has sixty-three replies and an abundance of dates. She chronicled her experiences in – to give the book its full title – “A Round-Heeled Woman: My Late-Life Adventures in Sex and Romance”.

And bringing the story to the stage is Jane Prowse, a writer and director whose work has spanned the stage and screen. Her credits for television include “The Commander”, which she wrote and directed, plus “Trial & Retribution”, whilst her credits for the stage include various productions on both sides of the Atlantic. She wrote and directed “Up on the Roof”, which was recognised with nomination from the Laurence Olivier Awards, as well as “The Pearl”, based on the novel by John Steinbeck.

But to bring “A Round-Heeled Woman” to the stage she cast Sharon Gless in the lead role, who has also enjoyed a successful career on the stage and screen. Most may know her for shows like “Cagney and Lacey” or “Queer as Folk”, though she has also appeared in the likes of “Chapter 2” at the Gielgud Theatre and “Misery” at the Criterion Theatre.

“A Round-Heeled Woman” is at the Aldwych Theatre from Wednesday 30th November 2011 (previews from Thursday 24th November 2011) to Saturday 14th January 2012.
