Sweeney Todd

In 2012 those headed to London’s West End will have another opportunity to witness a musical that has won over audiences on both sides of the Atlantic since it first appeared on Broadway in the 1970s. It is “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” and it is set to appear at the Adelphi Theatre following its successful run at the Chichester Festival Theatre. Just like its Chichester run it will feature the talents of two of the country’s best known performers – Imelda Staunton and Michael Ball – whilst retaining the stand-out musical numbers of Stephen Sondheim’s original.

The production first appeared at the Uris Theatre back in 1979 and would eventually appear in London the following year. Based on the play of the same name, which was first staged earlier in the 1970s, by Christopher Bond it would prove to be a successful show. Not only would audiences witness it on Broadway and West End stages it would also make its way to the big screen in the form of Tim Burton’s movie adaptation featuring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, so it goes to show it has made a lasting impression.

Sweeney Todd, also known as Benjamin Barker, returns to London following a period of 15 years false imprisonment and soon learns that a shocking and despicable act was carried out against his wife by his judge. So with these wrongdoings against himself and his family he vows revenge, concocting a shocking and memorable method alongside the pie-shop owner Mrs Lovett.

Imelda Staunton returns to the world of “Sweeney Todd” following her appearance in the show at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2011, where the show received positive reviews. Staunton is a well known actress who has previously appeared in a wealth of West End shows and popular movies, making her a recognisable face for London theatre audiences. She is perhaps best known of the “Harry Potter” movies of the Mike Leigh film “Vera Drake” though she has also appeared in shows like “Entertaining Mr Sloane” alongside Matthew Horne at the Trafalgar Studios in 2009.

“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street ” follows “One Man, Two Guvnors” at the Adelphi Theatre from Tuesday 20th March 2012 (previews from Saturday 10th March 2012) to Saturday 22nd September 2012.
