Singin In The Rain

Ask audiences to name a movie musical and there are many that come to mind, but one that stands out is the classic 1952 film that starred Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds. It is a film that has become a cultural phenomenon in the years since its release and its legacy is likely to continue well into the future. This is proven once again by the latest adaptation hitting the stage in the West End in 2012 following appearance at the Chichester Festival Theatre as London theatre audiences flock to witness “Singin’ in the Rain” at the Palace Theatre. With a famous story and some high quality talent in the starring roles, it is a production that will have many admirers.

“Singin’ in the Rain” focuses on a famous part of Hollywood history when the silent movies, which had dominated the landscape for many years, were beginning to be replaced by the so-called ‘talkies’. We follow Don Lockwood, an actor who has had great success as a silent movie star and has been romantically linked to one of his co-stars, as he faces this big change. The story is best known for the musical number “Singin’ in the Rain”, which famously featured Gene Kelly singing down a rain-drenched street.

This time around it will be Adam Cooper that faces the downpour and he does so on the back of a career that has seen him appear in a wealth of shows. He is a dancer and choreographer for the world of ballet in addition to his work as a musical theatre performer and as a results he has worked with the Royal Ballet alongside various West End shows. His credits in the latter include “Guys and Dolls” at the Piccadilly Theatre and “The Wizard of Oz” at the Royal Festival Hall, though he has also choreographed and directed a wealth of other productions.

And whilst audiences still flock to see other blockbuster West End musicals like “We Will Rock You” and “Legally Blonde the Musical”, “Singin’ in the Rain” will stand out thanks to the signature musical number, which is likely to see those on the front row get pretty wet. A system is also in place to recycle the water after each show so that the 500 litres of water that pumps out a minute is not wasted.

“Singin’ in the Rain” is at the Palace Theatre from Wednesday 15th February 2012 (previews from Saturday 4th February 2012) and has an initial booking period to Saturday 29th September 2012.
