Long Days Journey Into Night

Audiences headed to the Apollo Theatre in 2011 have had plenty of productions to enjoy, from the West End return of “Yes, Prime Minister” to the second run of Jez Butterworth’s “Jerusalem”. This tradition of stand-out shows continues in 2012 with the appearance of “Long Day’s Journey into Night”, which is set to appear at the venue from April to August 2012. The play is a classic piece from Eugene O’Neill which earned him one of many Pulitzer Prizes during his career in the first half of the 20th century and should attract a considerable audience when it appears in the West End.

And this success should be cemented by the stand-out casting as well, with the show’s patriarch James Tyrone portrayed by Hercule Poirot himself David Suchet. The actor arrives at the Apollo Theatre for the second time in recent years following 2010’s “All My Sons” alongside Zoe Wanamaker. The Award-winning actor has appeared in a wide range of productions for the stage and screen, from the mentioned series “Poirot” for ITV to renowned plays like “The Last Confession” at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2007.

As James Tyrone he plays the lead in “Long Day’s Journey into Night”, the patriarch of the Tyrone family, which also consists of his wife Mary and their sons Jamie and Edmund.  The story is O’Neill’s semi-autobiographical piece which explores the dysfunctions of the family during a particularly hot summer’s day. The year is 1912 and throughout the course of the day we observe the alcoholism, regrets, drug abuse and conflict run through the family in what is often considered one of O’Neill’s greatest pieces of work.

O’Neill penned it in 1941 and it would be performed in 1956, three years after his death in 1953, and it was one of many of his pieces to win a Pulitzer Prize alongside “Beyond the Horizon” in 1918, “Anna Christie” in 1920 and “Strange Interlude” in 1928. His work is remembered to this day and is regularly seen on international stages.

“Long Day’s Journey into Night”, under the direction of Anthony Page, is set to appear at the Apollo Theatre from Wednesday 11th April 2012 (previews from Monday 2nd April 2012) to Saturday 18th August 2012.
