Some Like It Hip Hop

The Peacock Theatre – the West End outlet for the home of contemporary dance in London, Sadler’s Wells – is set to welcome back ZooNation to the nation’s capital in 2011 as “Some Like it Hip Hop” lands on its stage. It is the latest production from the company that brought “Into the Hoods” to the Royal Festival Hall in 2010 and just as that offered a hip hop version of “Into the Woods”, this one will do the same thing for Billy Wilder’s 1959 comedy movie “Some Like it Hot”. So in a year that the Peacock Theatre is also welcoming productions such as “Havana Rakatan” and “The Snowman”, among others, “Some Like it Hip Hop” will be another stand out show on its roster.

Directing the show is the founder of ZooNation, Kate Prince, who will work from her script that she co-wrote with Felix Harrison. It will be her latest work for the company following “Into the Hoods” (which earned her a Laurence Olivier Award nomination in 2009) and other credits that include “Breakin’ Convention” at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, “BoxBeat” at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre and “All You Need is Love” at the Queen’s Theatre, among others. Prince is also known for her work for television, which has seen her accumulate choreography credits for the likes of “Strictly Dance Fever” and “Sport Relief”.

And the show that is brought to the stage under her watch will bring a hip hop spin to the Billy Wilder classic as a compelling plot filled with revolution, mistaken identity and romance to the stage. As it is a ZooNation production, London theatre audiences can also expect plenty of physical expertise emerge as the hip hop comedy unfolds onstage.

The cast includes Tommy Franzen, Lizzie Gough and Teneisha Bonner with Josh Cohen and DJ Wilde providing the music. Franzen is well known to audiences for numerous television credits that include the BBC talent show “So You Think You Can Dance”, in addition to movies like “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” and the Beijing Olympics Handover Ceremony. So he is a highly skilled and experienced street dance.

“Some Like it Hip Hop” makes its appearance at the Peacock Theatre from Thursday 20th October 2011 to Saturday 19th November 2011.
