Being Shakespeare

“Being Shakespeare” will be the latest opportunity for audiences to witness the work of Simon Callow onstage, following a career that has seen him appear in a number of prestigious productions over the past few years. This time, however, it will be as part of a one-man show that will take a look at the man behind some of the most renowned and influential works of the English Language – William Shakespeare. The show is due to appear at Trafalgar Studios 1 in June 2011 and arrives amongst a host of Shakespearean productions that are also in the capital at the same time.

In “Being Shakespeare” Callow will take on the role of many of Shakespeare’s most famous characters in a script penned by Jonathan Bate – a writer behind books such as “The Genius of Shakespeare” and the RSC’s “Shakespeare: The Complete Works”. But it is not just his characters that we are concerned with here – audiences with theatre tickets will also get to look at the man behind the characters, who has had a profound effect on the literary world in a way that he could never have envisaged. It appeared at the Richmond Theatre when it was last in London and went by the name “Shakespeare – the Man from Stratford”, but this time around it is the turn of West End audiences to get a look in.

Simon Callow is a renowned actor whose back catalogue of work includes various work related to or written by Shakespeare, from “Twelfth Night” at the National Theatre in 2011 to the movie “Shakespeare in Love”. He has also appeared in “Waiting for Godot” alongside Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen at the Haymarket Theatre in 2009 and “Equus” at the Chichester Festival Theatre, whilst also finding time to appear in movies such as “Four Weddings and a Funeral”.

And the show appears whilst a host of the Bard’s work is in the capital, from the two productions of “Much Ado About Nothing” are running at the Wyndham’s Theatre and Globe, to the upcoming production of “The Tempest” at the Haymarket..
