One Man Two Guvnors

Following its successful run at the Lyttelton National Theatre and the Adelphi Theatre, “One Man, Two Guvnors” has chosen the Theatre Royal Haymarket for the next chapter of its successful run in London. The production will boast a new Francis Henshall in Owain Arthur, as James Corden take the show across the country and to the other side of the Atlantic, but will retain the same high quality script that has earned so many fans since it opened in 2011.

This script, by Richard Bean, takes its cues from the classic story “The Servant of Two Masters” by Carlo Goldoni, which was penned back in 1743, and updates it to 1960s Brighton. As a result it has become the latest hit from a celebrated playwright whose work has won numerous awards, nominations and acclaim. His credits include “The Heretic” at the Royal Court Theatre in 2011, which won Best New Play at the Evening Standard Awards, “England People Very Nice” at the Olivier National Theatre in 2009 and “The Hypochondriac” at the Almeida Theatre in 2005.

But then, as he was using Goldoni’s text as a starting point, it was bound to be a new hit for the playwright. After all, “The Servant of Two Masters” has stood the test of time for many centuries, having emerged in 1743 and set in stone in 1753. Over the years it has been interpreted again and again in countries around the world until “One Man, Two Guvnors” opened in 2011.

The plot introduces audiences to the skiffle player with a large appetite Francis Henshall, whose lust for food is enough to move the plot forward and present plenty of comedy and other memorable moment. Set in Brighton in the 1960s the plot is set in motion when Henshall is fired from the skiffle band and he must instead take on a new role as a servant to a local crook. But that’s not all; Henshall, forever following the advice of his stomach, takes on further employment from someone else so that he can fund his eating habits and all he has to do is ensure that his two masters do not come face to face.

In a year that also brings us the likes of “The Importance of Being Earnest”, “One Man, Two Guvnors” runs at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from Friday 2nd March 2012, with an initial booking period taking it to Saturday 15th September 2012.
