Rock of Ages

The famous Broadway musical “Rock of Ages” arrives on the stage of the Shaftesbury Theatre in August 2011, ready for audiences to take a trip back to the 1980s and celebrate the era of glam rock. Featuring some of the best known songs of the time, plus a celebrated book by Chris D’Arienzo, it has accumulated a wealth of fans on the other side of the Atlantic and this led to a host of Tony Award-nominations. So as it makes the journey across the pond to a London theatre stage in the West End it is going to be met with great anticipation.

The plot of “Rock of Ages” focuses on a small town girl – Sherrie - and the adventure through glam rock that she undergoes in 1987 LA. We meet the Kansas-born girl as she arrives on the sunset strip and meets Drew, currently a busboy, but actually a wannabe big city rocker. Together they embark on a whirlwind romance and bond to some of the best known songs of the 1980s – with the likes of Bon Jovi, Poison and Journey celebrated.  As such those with theatre tickets get to experience some of these classic tracks for themselves as they are performed spectacularly onstage by the talented team.

“Rock of Ages” first appeared in front of audiences in 2006 when it premiered at the Vanguard in Hollywood – where Tenacious D’s Kyle Gass starred – and has since been seen on stages all over the world, from its national tour of the US to its appearance in Toronto as well. As it arrives in the West End in 2011 it also appears in Australia at the same time, whilst a Hollywood movie is also in production. So for writer Chris D’Arienzo things are looking good as this blockbuster musical continues to draw in the crowds.

It means that the West End will have another jukebox musical to add to the long list of popular productions that fit a similar description, from the Queen musical “We Will Rock You” to “Million Dollar Quartet”, which also transfers from Broadway in 2011. The latter features the music Elvis, Johnny Cash and more and is one of many musicals making their way to the stage this year.
