Shrek the Musical

In the last decade the West End has continued to attract numerous hit shows and amongst them have been the stage versions of some of the decade’s hit movies as well. Many are familiar with the antics of Billy Elliot in the hit movie of the same name and since it came and disappeared from our cinema screens it has spawned a stage musical that continues to attract the punters. Then there’s Legally Blonde, which has also been creating a huge impression at its home of the Savoy Theatre. Add to these the other movies-come-musicals such as Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Sister Act and you realise that some of our most beloved movie classics have made for some stand-out theatre shows.

So in 2011 it is only right that another movie character is realised on stage and on this occasion he will take the form of everyone’s favourite green ogre – Shrek.  Appearing on the stage of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane it promises to recreate the magic of that original hit movie live onstage, with Nigel Lindsay in the title role alongside a cast that includes Amanda Holden, Richard Blackwood and Nigel Harman. Having already wowed audiences on the other side of the Atlantic it is now time for London theatre audiences to get in on the action.

In Shrek the Musical we follow the swamp dwelling title character as he lives his life in a small house within a large forest. It is within this forest and the surrounding world that we revisit some of the classic fairy tales that have been told over the years, with Shrek embarking on a journey alongside his new companion Donkey to rescue a princess who has become trapped inside a castle. But this lands him in deep water as the princess was supposed to be rescued by a handsome prince, thus breaking the curse that has been placed upon her. Along the way is an array of familiar fairy tale characters.

The show is being directed by the American theatre director Jason Moore, whose credits also span into television work.  On the other side of the Atlantic he has been behind such high profile shows (which have also appeared in the West End) as Avenue Q and Les Miserables, whilst his television credits have included One Tree Hill.
