Ghost The Musical

If the West End has managed to prove anything over the last few years it is that some of the most popular movies of our time can also make for stand-out musical theatre productions. In fact, some of the biggest London theatre hits have often taken the forms of compelling adaptations, from Billy Elliot the Musical to Legally Blonde the Musical and even the popular Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Now the capital gets to welcome a new stage adaptation to Theatreland as Ghost makes its way to the Piccadilly Theatre in 2011, presenting a new team of actors taking on roles made famous by Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg.

In the case of the latter it is Sharon D Clarke who performs in the role of Oda Mae Brown, the phoney psychic who helps the ghostly Sam, as she becomes the second actress in recent years to inhabit a role formerly occupied by Goldberg, following from Patina Miller in Sister Act the Musical. Clarke is a well known stage and screen actress, perhaps best known for the role of Lola Griffin in Holby City, whose credits include Rent at the Shaftesbury Theatre, We Will Rock You at the Dominion and Chicago in its original location of the Adelphi Theatre. So she brings a wealth of experience to the role as she breathes new life to a classic character.

The production is set to be directed by Matthew Warchus when it appears in London -  as well as when it runs  at the Manchester Opera House beforehand - having been behind a host of productions across the country. He has experience directing the likes of True West at the Donmar Warehouse, as well as The Norman Conquests at the Old Vic and The Lord of the Rings at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

Those purchasing theatre tickets to witness Ghost the Musical will be witnessing the story made famous in the 1990 movie Ghost, in which Sam and Molly (Swayze and Moore first time around), are tragically torn apart when Sam is brutally murdered in the street. Now he is trapped between our world and the next as he frantically tries to save the love of his life from suffering the same fate as him. Along the way he enlists the help of a medium in the form of Oda Mae Brown as he attempts to communicate with Molly from beyond the grave.
