lasting impression for many years to come. In recent years, he has returned to the spotlight thanks to the movie “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll”, which featured acclaimed actor Andy Serkis in the role of the troubled star, whilst a stage production has also been doing the rounds across the country and it is the latter which returns to the West End in September. The show originally appeared at the Leicester Square Theatre and became an enormous success, whilst appearances across the United Kingdom have reminded audiences of the impact Dury has had on their musical tastes. Now it arrives for a brief run at the Garrick Theatre, with Josh Darcy maintaining his part as Fred ‘Spider’ Rowe and Mark White taking on the title role.
Dury was a deeply troubled star, even if his happy public persona refused to hint at it, and it is this aspect of his character that is explored in “Hit Me! The Life and Rhymes of Ian Dury”. The show looks at the singer’s life and also features many of the songs that he made famous alongside the hit band The Blockheads. It means that audiences arriving at the Garrick Theatre in 2010 will hear renditions of classic songs like “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick”, as well as “Reasons to be Cheerful” and “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll”.
With Ian Dury and the Blockheads, music was never quite the same and the effect they had on the 1970s New Wave scene – and on music as a whole – can still be felt to this day. It has been over ten years since the influential singer sadly passed, but his influence will extend well into the future.
Josh Darcy, who returns as Dury’s roadie Fred Rowe, has appeared in numerous shows over the years, some of which have previously seen him team up with writer Jeff Merrifield – including Ken Campbell productions such as “The Warp” – whilst television credits and shows in London have provided him with many admirers in the UK.
Hit Me! The Life and Rhymes of Ian Dury makes its brief appearance at the Garrick Theatre from Thursday 9th September 2010 until Saturday 11th September 2010.
