The answer lies in “Room on the Broom”, which is opening its doors at the Garrick Theatre in 2010, providing the latest in a long line of children’s shows to grace a West End stage. With daytime performances through most of August, it will provide an exciting show for younger audiences as a host of colourful characters fill the stage, from the witch herself to her cat, a dog and even a ferocious dragon. So if you were a fan of previous West End hits like “The Gruffalo” or last year’s “We’re All Going on a Bear Hunt”, then “Room on the Broom” is the show for you.
This is because the production features many of the same talents working behind the scenes, with the minds behind “The Gruffalo” providing us with the original novel, and the creative team behind the stage version of “We’re All Going on a Bear Hunt” hard at work. It makes for a trusted group and when “Room on the Broom” takes to the stage, they will prove their worth once again.
Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler both worked on the original book and it appeared in stores back in 2002, delighting audiences ever since. It was their latest in a long line of collaborations that included both “The Gruffalo” in 1999 and “The Gruffalo’s Child” in 2004. As a writer, Donaldson has penned more than twenty books, with her latest taking the forms of “Stick Man” in 2008 and “Taby McTat” in 2009.
Scheffler’s career began in the mid 1980s and in addition to his regular work with Donaldson has also provided images to authors across the continent. His work as an illustrator has seen him delve into advertising and greetings cards designs as well.
With “Room on the Broom” they dealt with the problem facing a witch when she has problems of space as she flies around on her broom. Usually it is just her and her cat sharing the night sky but when her hat, wand and bow are all blown away from a sudden gust of wind, she must employ the help of others to get them back. So coming along for the ride are a dog, a frog and a bird, whilst a ferocious dragon is hot on their tale.
Room on the Broom appears for daytime performances at the West End’s Garrick Theatre from Wednesday 28th July 2010 until Sunday 29th August 2010.
