Burn the Floor

Burn the Floor will be hoping to attract numerous dance theatre fans to the Shaftesbury Theatre this July as the Broadway hit makes its way to the West End. The show has already earned an abundance of admirers from around the world and looks set to repeat this success in the United Kingdom, not least because it has employed two well known performers as guest stars during its run – Brian Fortuna and Ali Bastian. But that’s not all; “Burn the Floor” also features some of the best choreography you could imagine, having been dreamed up by a World Champion dancer to celebrate Elton John’s birthday in 1997. All of this comes together to make a West End show that no one will want to miss.

Audiences arriving at the Shaftesbury theatre will be treated to a memorable experience as they embark on an epic journey through the very best in dance. 20 renowned and award-winning international dancers will take to the stage as dance is portrayed for the epic drama it encompasses. So we will see renditions of the Swing, the Quickstep, the Mambo, as well as the Rumba, the Charleston, the Cha-Cha, the Foxtrot, the Lindy and the Jive. With such a hectic onstage display, it is no wonder it has been given the title of “Burn the Floor”!

The spectacle is the result of more than ten years of ideas, with the first staging taking place in 1997 for Elton John’s birthday and the 2009 appearance in New York making it a runaway Broadway success story. So the West End version of the phenomenon was inevitable and its upcoming appearance at the Shaftesbury Theatre will make for a glorious showcase in 2010.

Jason Gilkison is the World Champion dancer behind the choreography of the show and he has held this distinction on many occasions. He was the Australian World Champion for much of the 1980s and 1990s and has been bestowed with this honour from various other countries as well. He is also a director and producer in addition to his work as a choreographer and as a result audiences will have seen his name attached to the likes of “Floorplay”, “Extreme Ballroom” and “Back with a Vengeance” (the latter being a segment from the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney).

Meanwhile, guest stars Brian Fortuna and Ali Bastian are best known as a pairing on the hit television series “Strictly Come Dancing”, who both reached the semi-finals in December 2009.

Burn the Floor is at the Shaftesbury Theatre from Monday 26th July 2010 (previews from Wednesday 21st July 2010) to Saturday 4th September 2010.
