SYNOPSIS

Billy Connolly - HMV Apollo Hammersmith

The iconic comedian makes a triumphant appearance on the London stage this January with another run at the HMV Apollo Hammersmith.

Connolly is one of the best known comedy figures in the UK, having enjoyed a career that has spanned decades and made him a household name. Though his material can be controversial at times, he has fans all around the world, allowing him to continue making appearances even to this day. His everlasting appeal is something that many comics could only dream of.

Audiences will also be able to gasp at his trademark height, something that has earned him the nickname of “The Big Yin” (“The Big One”) in Scotland and he appears at the HMV Apollo Hammersmith throughout the month of January 2010, showcasing his unique style of observational humour and stories from his life. He will undoubtedly touch on topics he has become known for, from his life growing up in Glasgow to the tribulations of Scottish weather.

Born in 1942, Connolly originally worked as a ship welder in the Glasgow shipyards before pursuing a career as a folk singer, before transitioning to the comedian we know him as today, turning many heads for his irreverent humour, often considered crude and cruel, but always funny. In 2007 he was named as the Greatest Stand Up Comedian of all time in Channel 4’s “100 Greatest Stand Ups”. It is no wonder; after all, his style would go on to inspire many comedians of our time, with the likes of Ross Noble being one of his many admirers. In fact the young comic regularly states that he hopes to still be performing when he reaches Connolly’s age and is even following in The Big Yin’s footsteps with his programme “Ross Noble’s Australian Trip” inspired by Connolly’s “World Tour of Australia” from 1995.

But Connolly has also tried his hand at acting and has appeared in numerous movies over the years, including “The Boondock Saints” (1999), “Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day” (2009), “The Man Who Sued God” (2001), “The Last Samurai” (2003) and “The X Files: I Want To Believe” (2008).

So if you are in the mood for the best stand up comedian in the world then look no further than Billy Connolly when he appears at the HMV Apollo Hammersmith from Tuesday 5th January 2010 to Sunday 17th January 2010.
