Enron
Laurence Olivier Award nominated playwright Lucy Prebble makes a triumphant return with “Enron”, the follow up to her breakthrough production “The Sugar Syndrome”, a play that managed to turn heads at the Royal Court Theatre in 2003.
“Enron” is a product of its time, focusing on the slow demise of a company that caused great embarrassment for the Bush Administration and now echoes the current climate of uncertainty in the world economic crisis. The infamous scandal of Enron in 2001 was one of many things that led to worldwide scrutiny falling on the American government, but the seeds for its fall were made well in advance during the 1990s; the period in which this play is set. With the knowledge the world has, now is the best time to cast a light on this era as the banks continue to struggle and unemployment figures continue to rise.
But the evening will be made all the more unique by the range of stimuli on offer, with music, dance and video all working together to truly bring the world of 1990s capitalism to life.
“Enron” has already proven to be a popular draw after opening at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2009 to rave reviews, before an appearance at London’s Royal Court Theatre was announced, with tickets sold out well in advance of its start date. Therefore its appearance at the Noel Coward Theatre was almost inevitable, cementing Prebble as a playwright to keep an eye on, with a promising career ahead of her.
As well as a Laurence Olivier Award nomination, Prebble has also been honoured with a Critics’ Circle Award for the Most Promising Playwright of her time, something that had already been hinted at with her PMA Award for Most Promising Playwright she won for her short play “Liquid”, which she penned whilst studying at the University of Sheffield.
Starring in the production is Samuel West, a British actor with a long history of experience. Amongst his credits is “The Family Reunion” at the Donmar Warehouse, “Hamlet” for the Royal Shakespeare Company, “Betrayal” at the Donmar Warehouse and “Antony & Cleopatra” at the National Theatre. He has also appeared on numerous occasions at the Chichester Festival Theatre in productions such as “Cain” and “Doctor Faustus”, whilst screen credits include “Notting Hill” and “Iris”.
“Enron” is at the Noel Coward Theatre from Tuesday 26th January 2010 (previews from Saturday 16th January 2010) to Saturday 8th May 2010.
