Jerusalem

“Jerusalem” lands on the stage of the Apollo Theatre for another anticipated London run following its eye opening appearance at the Royal Court Theatre in the August of 2009. This time it is West End audiences who are given the chance to see Jez Butterworth’s play concerning an infamous man in a local community and the different people who want a piece of him.

The show features a cast of big London stage names, who come to the Apollo after filling the roles at the Royal Court, including “Pirates Of The Caribbean” and “The Office” star Mackenzie Crook, as well as Mark Rylance; well known for appearing in a range of plays at the Old Vic and Donmar Warehouse.

The performances of these two were given particular praise during the show’s original run, with critics hailing “Jerusalem” for its storyline and its ability to stand out in 2009, which made it one of the must see shows of the year.

But credit also goes to the rest of the cast, who brilliantly frame the two stars, including Jessica Barden, Tom Brooke, Greg Burridge, Lewis Coppen, Alan David, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Lenny Harvey, Gerard Horan, Danny Kirrane, Charlotte Mills, Lucy Montgomery, Sarah Moyle, Dan Poole, Harvey Robinson and Barry Sloane.

The story of “Jerusalem” centres on St George’s Day when the local county fair is coming to a small town. We are introduced to Mark Rylance’s Johnny Byron, an infamous man who is wanted in all quarters of the community, all for varying reasons. The police want Johnny because they view him as a contemporary Pied Piper and wish to see him behind bars; the council wants him so that they can evict him from his home; his friends want Johnny so that they can pump him full of booze and drugs, whilst Troy Whitworth wants him so that he can give him a good kicking. But whilst those around the town wish to obtain Johnny for reasons unfavourable to him, there are also his children, who want nothing more than to go to the St George’s Day Fair.

Whilst Mackenzie Crook is best known for playing Gareth in “The Office” and following this up with the three “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, he has also appeared in London shows such as “The Seagull” at the Royal Court Theatre and “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” at the Gielgud, whilst Mark Rylance has also made his mark on the stage. His previous credits include “Life x3” at the Old Vic and “True West” at the Donmar Warehouse, with 2009 also seeing him step into the role of “Endgame”; replacing Richard Briers in the role in what would have been his final stage appearance.

“Jerusalem” is at the Apollo Theatre in London’s West End from Wednesday 10th February 2010 (previews from Thursday 28th January 2010) to Saturday 24th April 1010.
