SYNOPSIS
Footsbarn Christmas Cracker
Those hoping for something a little different this Christmas will be pleased to hear they can experience a seasonal show with a twist in 2009 as Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre presents its first yuletide production.
The venue will be opening its doors to the Footsbarn Theatre Company who are well known for presenting unique and interesting works of theatre, whilst also celebrating up and coming new talent. This Christmas they will be presenting “Footsbarn Theatre’s Christmas Cracker” for audiences from Tuesday 22nd December 2009.
It is the first time the company has presented a London show since 2008, back when they wowed audiences with an original take on “A Midsummer Night’ Dream”. They are a Cornwall based theatre company who specialise mostly in the works of Shakespeare and Moliere, with surreal spectacles replacing the more traditional interpretations of their stories.
For “Chrismas Cracker” they aim to bring to life the historical events that occupy London’s past, harking on old traditions and the work of Shakespeare to bring the show together, with a range of colourful characters at their disposal. Amongst the goings on, audiences will be treated to a three headed Shakespeare as he reads out poetry and brings about new words to our language to the compelled crowd, whilst other characters include Bottom (from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”) and Juliette (who walk a tightrope on this stage) alongside King Lear and the Lord of Misrule.
Earlier in 2009 the Artistic Director of the Globe Theatre Dominic Dromgoole referenced the bizarre proceedings head on in a quote where he declared that “They are genuinely bananas, wild and imaginative – that’s why I love them so much”. It is a sentiment that is hoped will traverse to the hearts of the audience, as they witness London’s pagan past come to life in the open air venue, where two half hour acts will take them on a memorable journey.
Whilst the Footsbarn Theatre Company are regularly found touring their productions around various venues (including a 1984 world tour that included more than 60 theatrical pieces) and on the stage of London, they also have a permanent home of “La Chausée”, where they rehearse and base their productions. It is a farm that has been in their name since the early 1990s and it is here that the studios, learning areas, offices, workshops and rehearsal spaces of the Footsbarn Theatre Company are located.
“Footsbarn Theatre’s Christmas Cracker” is at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre from Tuesday 22nd December 2009 to Sunday 3rd January 2010.
