Breakfast at Tiffany's

Breakfast at Tiffany's

With Waiting For Godot’s Sean Mathias once again in the director’s chair at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, Truman Capote’s classic story of romance in 1940s New York takes centre stage in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The role that was once occupied on the silver screen by Audrey Hepburn will be handed over to Anna Friel (All For Love and the upcoming The Land of the Lost) as she takes on the iconic Holly Golightly, whilst George Peppard’s Fred Parsons comes to life onstage under the acting talent of Joseph Cross (Milk).

So whether you are a fan of the movie, the original novella upon which it is based or if you are completely new to the story this is sure to be a theatrical treat in the West End. So if there are any West End shows you want to see this year, make sure Breakfast at Tiffany’s is on your list.

The story is set in an America where the war in Europe is just over the horizon in 1940, as our protagonist Fred Parsons arrives in New York to try and make it as a writer. Fred is a native of Louisiana and the sights and sounds of the Big Apple are very different to back home, but he soon meets the charming and irresistible Holly Golightly, a woman who can have any man she wants. Every man who meets her manages to fall in love with her and Fred is no exception, but if he is to win her over then there are a lot of men he has to beat to the podium. He is a struggling writer and many of the men have more money than he could dream of, so his chances seem slim.

But Holly is coming round to him and soon enough it seems like she will love him back after all, but at some point her past is going to catch up with her.

The story has been in the public consciousness for around half a century, with Truman Capote’s original novella and the 1961 movie which followed, making this new stage version a highly anticipated show.

Breakfast At Tiffany’s is at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from Tuesday 29th September 2009 (previews from Wednesday 9th September 2009) to Saturday 9th January 2010.
