Dylan Moran: What It Is
At the Apollo Theatre during the end of 2009, cult comedian Dylan Moran will be bringing his acclaimed new stand up show What It Is to a London stage. Celebrated by his fans and admired by fellow comedians, Moran has enjoyed an extensive career as a stand up comic, actor and writer with television shows and movies appearing on his extensive CV. It makes What It Is an unmissable event that will leave audiences laughing to the very end with an array of unique observations, bizarre suggestions and cruel, unforgettable anecdotes.
Following up his tours Monster I, Monster II and Like, Totally, all of which have been critically acclaimed sell out shows, What It Is arrives in London following appearances in venues across the country, from the Edinburgh Playhouse to the Manchester Opera House and Birmingham Alexandra Theatre. He is well known for portraying a mumbling, grumpy and seemingly drunken persona for the stage – a guise which he amplified further when he mined the style for the character of Bernard Black in the hit early naughties sitcom Black Books. The show was a success, featuring himself as writer along with Father Ted co-creator Graham Linehan, with Moran starring alongside Bill Bailey and Tamsin Greig.
However, Bailey had come face to face with Moran before when Moran narrowly beat him out to the coveted Perrier Award at 1996’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It was widely reported to be the closest decision in the history of the award and Moran managed to win it at the relatively young age of 24, making him the award’s youngest recipient. He had started comedy at the age of 20 after witnessing Ardal O’Hanlon perform at the Comedy Cellar in Dublin and was soon finding great success, with his first major UK tour appearing in 1997 under the banner Gurgling For Money.
However, as well as touring he has also taken on many acting roles, appearing alongside the likes of Simon Pegg, Hank Azaria, Michael Caine, Rob Brydon, Steve Coogan and Nick Frost in a string of movies. These include The Actors (2003), Shaun of the Dead (2004), A Cock and Bull Story (2006) and Run Fatboy, Run (2007).
When he arrives in the capital in 2009, expect to be taken on a surreal journey through absurd stories and hilarious suggestions. He is a comedian like no other.
Dylan Moran: What It Is appears at the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue from Monday 26th October 2009 to Saturday 5th December 2009.
