Legally Blonde

The Savoy Theatre will be given a blonde makeover this winter as the hit movie Legally Blonde is transformed into a blockbusting West End musical. The roles that made stars of Reece Witherspoon and Luke Wilson will be inhabited by Two Pints of Lager and A Packet of Crisps star Sheridan Smith and former Blue member Duncan James.

People were captivated by the story of Elle Woods as she puts aside the stereotypes of being blonde and takes life more seriously. At the beginning of the story Elle has just been dumped by her boyfriend as he feels that he needs someone a little more serious. Elle, however, is not one to take matters lightly and decides to strip herself of her less than serious features, starting with her dreaded credit card, and head off to Harvard to study for a degree in Law. The 2001 movie was memorable for the way in which the supporting characters reacted to Elle’s appearance at College, as the story showed how people can be true to themselves and follow their dreams.

Taking on Reece Witherspoon’s role of Elle is Sheridan Smith, famous for appearing in various television programmes including Benidorm, Love Soup, Grown Ups, The Royle Family and the monumentally successful Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps. Though she is best known for her role in the latter sitcom, she has also made a name for herself on the stage, with appearances in 2007’s A Little Shop Of Horrors at the Duke of York’s Theatre and 1998’s Bugsy Malone at the Queen’s Theatre.

When Elle’s ex boyfriend discovers that she has arrived at Harvard, the look of shock on his face will be provided by Duncan James, who is well known as one member of the boy band Blue. He has recently been seen on television screens in the ITV celebrity talent show Dancing On Ice. His other credits include Plus One and a recent rendition of the musical Chicago in which he himself entered the legal world by playing Billy Flynn.

The production will be directed by the highly experienced Jerry Mitchell, bringing with him all he has learnt from the hit musical Hairspray, allowing for an entertaining evening of song and dance.
