Priscilla Queen of the Desert

Priscilla Queen of the Desert

Since March 2009 audiences across the capital have been enjoying the colourful antics of a lovable group of characters in the Australian musical “Priscilla Queen of the Desert”. It is a story that has easily delighted large crowds, with an array of memorable songs mixing with a compelling storyline that is certain to leave a smile on the faces of audience members. During its tenure at the Palace Theatre it has featured a host of top names amongst its strong points, including Jason Donovan from 2009 to early 2010 and Oliver Thornton and as a result, we can expect it to remain firmly in place well into the future.

But whilst this line-up is ever-evolving, the sights and sounds on display have remained as exciting and heart-warming. The story follows a group of unique characters – Tick, Bernadette and Adam – who put on a renowned drag act in Sydney. They are used to the bright lights and colourful personalities of the big city, but they are also up for a challenge, so they decide that they will take their show out of its comfort zone and perform it at a casino in Alice Springs. But this adventure will mean embarking on a journey into the Australian outback and it is out there in which they find love and friendship whilst witnessing their most precious dreams become a reality. And to make their journey they are going to need a form of transport, which takes the form of the most memorable character of all – a tatty old bus named Priscilla.

The story has taken on many forms, with the original 1994 movie upon which it was based starring the likes of Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce amongst its draws. Its appearance on cinema screen in the early 1990s would lead to an Academy Award and, eventually, a stage musical that opened its doors in Sydney in 2006. The original production featured some of the actors who would subsequently make the transition to London, including Tony Sheldon as Bernadette (who eventually stepped down from the role), whilst performers like Jason Donovan would attract a large crowd to the Palace Theatre.

Though Donovan no longer portrays the drag queen Tick, the show still features a talented team of performers amongst its line-up and it is likely that the production will continue to turn many heads well into the future.

But then, considering it also features songs such as “I Will Survive”, “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, “Downtown”, “What’s Love Got to Do With It?”, “I Love the Nightlife”, “Finally”, “Shake Your Groove Thing” and much more, it was always destined for great things.

So if you are looking for a memorable musical featuring some top performing talents, then make sure you witness Priscilla Queen of the Desert as it continues its run at the Palace Theatre.
