The Tiger Who Came To Tea

The Tiger Who Came To Tea

There are plenty of shows going on the capital for the older generations, from well known musicals like “The Phantom of the Opera” to long-running plays like “The Woman in Black”. But what about the younger generation? What is the best way of introducing them to the wide variety of shows in the West End?

The answer could come in the form of the Lyric Theatre’s latest show – “The Tiger Who Came to Tea” – which is set to appear on its stage from July to September for daytime performances. It is based on Judith Kerr’s classic picture book and features actors such as Jenanne Redman and Alan Atkins.

In “The Tiger Who Came to Tea” we meet Sophie and her Mother as they prepare to enjoy their tea. But this is not going to be an ordinary evening and soon they have to put up with the antics of an uninvited guest – a large and stripy tiger! Their evening plans may have to wait as the animal tears through their supplies – eating and drinking anything it can get its hands on – and this means that Sophie can’t even take her bath! When Dad comes home he suggests eating out at a cafe, but only time will tell if their new friend will return the next time they sit down for tea.

Judith Kerr is a well known German writer who settled in the UK after fleeing from her home in the 1930s. Her life in Nazi Germany inspired the children’s novel “When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit” and whilst her most famous story is “The Tiger Who Came to Tea” from 1968, she has also penned the likes of “One Night at the Zoo” and “Twinkles, Arthur and Puss”. As such her career has spanned many decades and she continues to receive great praise.

“The Tiger Who Came to Tea” has been seen in the capital before, with a run at the New Wimbledon Theatre in 2009. It has also been seen all over the country on a national tour and it goes to show that the story is as fresh and exciting as it was when it first emerged in 1968. It now appears at the Lyric Theatre for daytime performances, with the evenings making way for Thriller - Live.

“The Tiger Who Came To Tea” is suitable for children over the age of 3 and is at the Lyric Theatre from July 2012 until September 2012.
