Chicago

After entertaining audiences at the Cambridge Theatre since 2006 “Chicago” makes its latest transfer since re-opening in the capital in 1997 by making its way to the Garrick Theatre. By doing so it leaves its former home to “Matilda the Musical” but retains everything that audiences love about the show: great performances, stand-out songs and a compelling story. These are also the factors in making the show one of the best known musicals in the world, having started life as a play over 80 years ago and influencing countless other classics during the 20th century.

The classic story of “Chicago” takes London theatre audiences back to the 1920s when the celebrity criminal was firmly in the public consciousness. We are introduced to Roxie Hart as she is thrown into prison for the murder of her husband, giving her all of the attention she had desired over the years, but for all the wrong reasons. She wanted to be a great performer and when she meets Velma Kelly, who has similar ambitions, she realises that her dream can still be realised. So Hart and Kelly enlist the help of a sleazy lawyer named Billy Flynn and make their bids for freedom.

But that’s not the only thing that makes “Chicago” shine; the show also features an array of stand-out songs that have found their way into popular culture. There’s “Cell Block Tango” as well as “Me and My Baby”, “All that Jazz”, “Funny Honey” and “Razzle Dazzle” to name but a few.

And then there’s the choreography from Bob Fosse, who lent his skills to a project championed by John Kaner and Fred Ebb and inspired by the original 1926 play by Chicago Tribune writer Maurice Dallas Watkins. Since the show’s first appearance as a musical it has not only been hugely influential it has also spawned a movie adaptation from 2002 with Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere in the lead roles.

And now its West End journey in the West End continues at the Garrick Theatre. The show first opened at the Cambridge Theatre in 1979 and was revived at the Adelphi Theatre in 1997, where it continued before transferring to the Cambridge Theatre in 2004 and then, as of November 2011, the Garrick Theatre.

It opens at said home on Monday 7th November 2011 where it will likely remain for some time to come.
