Grease
Grease - the #1 feel-good family hit musical - is back in the West End. Originally produced on Broadway in 1972, and released in the West End in 1974 and 1993, the 2007 revival is a glorious romp through the rock n' roll classics immortalised by John Travolta and Olivia Newton John in the hit 1978 movie. Playing now at the Piccadilly Theatre in London, this is Grease for a new generation and brings 50's Americana back to life with all its 'electrifyin' zest.
Grease is the Word
Grease is billed as a musical love story set in 1950s America. Danny Zuko is leader of the T-birds. He's slick and physical - and only has eyes for the new girl at school, Sandy Dumbrowski. With classic hits like "Summer Nights", "Greased Lightning", "Sandy", and "You're the One that I Want", Grease is the Word takes us on a roller coaster ride of romance, mayhem and teenage kicks. The show features the whole gang from Rydell High with Betty Rizzo as the leader of the Pink Ladies, and the cool and electrifyin' T-birds in top rock n' roll form.
The 2007 West End Revival
The 2007 production of Grease in the West End is a bright and energetic retelling of a classic story. It is directed by David Gilmore and choreographed by Arlene Phillips. Arlene has worked on many West End musicals, including Saturday Night Fever, The Sound of Music and Starlight Express. She is also known to TV audiences as one of the judging panel on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing show.
Grease opened on August 9, 2007 to much acclaim from theatre reviewers and critics. Headlining the cast in the show are Danny Bayne (Danny Zuko) and Susan McFadden (Sandy Dumbrowski). The couple were chosen to play the lead roles in the 2007 production by public vote in the ITV 'Grease is the Word' reality competition. It saw Danny and Susan beat off intense competition from several other contestants on the show in June 2007. The reality show mirrored the format used in the US earlier in the year to pick the lead roles for the 2007 Grease revival on Broadway. David Ian, producer of the 2007 Broadway Grease revival, featured as one of the judges on the British version of the TV show.
Production Changes
David Gilmore and Arlene Phillips have made a number of changes to the Grease format for the current West End production. New songs are in, and some old ones are out. Greased Lightning is performed by Kenickie and not Danny Zuko as it was in the film, and the Burger Palace Boys are now the T-Birds. The whole show has been made a lot more family friendly too with plenty of crossover between previous stage versions and the 1978 film. Together with some minor plot changes that keep the show rolling along at a breathtaking pace, the 2007 revival is already scaling the heights of success and is set to become another box office smash, just like its predecessors.
Please note: Although the producers of Grease cannot guarantee the appearance of any particular artist, Danny Bayne and Susan McFadden are expected to perform at all performances until 23/2/08, subject always to illness and holidays.
